Editorial art with tight deadlines can be fun.

This art was for an article by Jonathan Lehrfeld published in Military Times as the header for the online article and the cover for the magazine that month.

Jon Simkins, Executive Editor at Military Times, brought me on for piece with a rough idea of an assembly line to make overweight soldiers thin. I ran with that quickly and came up with the conveyer belt, mocked it all out with a sketch real fast in photoshop before jumping headlong into the piece using Photoshop to create the machinery and soldiers in separate files. Stitched it all together and added color before getting some critique with friends leading to the bright background against the drab greens to give it some fun contrast that would be striking on the cover.

I really appreciate the freedom Jon gives with these assignments. It’s always fun to work with an editor that trusts where you’re going with a piece.
